Introduction of Gangwon

Geography

Gangwon-do, with a population of 1,560,000, is located in the east region of the Korean Peninsula. It consists of one major mountain range, Taebaek, and a fewother minor mountain ranges. East of the Taebaek Mountain Range is called the Yeongdong Region, while west of it is called the Yeongseo Region. The eastem border of Gangwon-do faces the coastline, the westem border faces the capitol of Korea, Seoul, and the southem border is linked to other regions. The northem border which is crossed by the demilitarized zone, is another part of Gangwon-do called North-Gangwon-do.

Administrative District

Gangwon-do consists of seven cities and 11 districts, and has its Provincial Office based in Chuncheon.

Latitude, Longitude

Gangwon-do is located between 37 degrees 02 minutes and 38 degrees 37 minutes north latitude, and between 127 degrees 05 minutes and 129 degrees 22 minutes east longitude. The gross area of Gangwon-do is 20,569Km² , while south of the MDL(Military Demarcation Line) is 82% of that area at 16,873.5km². This area also accounts for 16.8% of the gross area of South Korea. From this area, 81.7% at 13,665.66Km² accounts for forests and fields, 9.9% at 1,668.69Km² accounts for farmland, and 9.1% at 1,539.25Km² accounts for miscellaneous land.

Climate

Gangwon-do’ s monsoon climate has all four distinct seasons. The distinct and various seasons play a remarkable role in the abundant natural scenery of Gangwon-do. And there are a variety of well-developed leisure sports which can be enjoyed for each season. Winter in particular, is the best season for leisure sports. Due to its abundance of snow and mountainous advantages, Gangwon-do will be hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
